Turistička organizacija Herceg Novi radi promovisanja pravih vrijednosti kojima obiluje kulturno-istorijsko nasljeđe grada, počinje serijal predstavljanja materijalnog i nematerijalnog blaga hercegnovske opštine.

POPE SIXTUS V

PERETICI – POPE SIXTUX V FROM KRUSEVICE

“By the road, near the spring, two Franciscan monks by chance passed by and they dropped in to rest and drink water. They have noticed thereby handsome and pert child, they entered into the conversation with him, and as they were convinced that he was really smart and gifted, they began to persuade him to leave his flock and to go with them to Kotor, and from there for several days to Rome, where he would study high schools and become a famous and honest man. When he becomes famous and respectable- they told hum – he will be able to help more and easier,  not only his parents, but also his entire poor village.

The boy, as soon as he heard these words he gladly agrees. He collected his flock and  run it up the hill, then he called his  friends shepherds and asked them take also his cattle to his home and to tell his father that he went “with these good people” into the world for better earnings.
To the top of Verige, where transportation for Perast has been always carried out, a boat was waiting for them, which brought them to a large rocky pier below the Zmajevic diocese. In the Franciscan monastery they had a dinner and stayed overnight, and from there in the morning at down, by a sailing boat they left for Venice. From Venice, they immediately went to Rome, where the boy was lodged into some church institution.

he young Peretic, by nature bright, agile and diligent, has progressed well in science, overtaking even the most diligent boys with much better pre-qualifications .And soon, the voice expanded about pious, quiet, humble and above all assiduous cleric Sixtus.

All this helped him to advance quickly in church titles. Before all of his comrades, he became a bishop, and the only one of all, the cardinal.  And as a bishop, and as a cardinal, he distinguished himself with his particular philosophical knowledge. At one of the papal conclave (the papal pope) – the story goes – the voters split into two camps and they could not agree on whom to choose. Sixtus, all the time, was sitting down calmly, watching what was going on. Finally, to the loudest group came to mind, when they noticed that they could not push their candidacy, to agree: “Come on, let’s choose that old man who did not say a word all day. He will be pope and we will govern instead of him, so that power will be in our hands. ”

Thus, they have made this way; Sixtus got the most votes and became the head of the church under the name of Sixtus V. As soon as he received the rule in the Roman church,  Sixtus V instituted pertinent  order, discipline and unconditional obedience. He, as the Pope, gladly pointed out his Slavic origin and that he was born in these parts. It is said that in his papal emblem, he put the Pear into the honor of his own village Krusevice. Since the Pear in Italian means “feather”, the villagers called this  hamlet where Sixtus was born –  Peretici. ”

This is how the “Boka” newspaper wrote in 1989 about Pope Sixtus V, conveying a story from Maksim Zlokovic’s book “Legends from Boka”

Italijanski oblik njegovog prezimena (ital.

AUTHOR BALSA BRKOVIC IN HIS STUDY “SAINTS ON THE GROUND OF MONTENEGRO“ WRITES:

“Among the well-known figures of the Christian historical and cultural vertical, which originate from our area, there is also the name of one pope. Well, although not a saint, the pattern is an interesting legend (or mystification and both are in the closest kinship). It is about Sixtus V (1520-1590). His pontificate began on 24th April 1585, and on the throne of St. Peter he sat as the successor to Pope Gregory XIII. Regardless of the relatively short pontificate, the Vatican Chronicle records Sixtus V as a significant Pope. According to the tradition that exists in Boka, Sixtus V originated from Boka’s village Krusevice, not far from Verige. Allegedly originates from the family Svilanovic, who once went to Italy. (Svilanovici are Orthodox Slavs who celebrate St Nicholas, but pride themselves with the alleged relationship with a Roman bishop).

His five-year rule is characterized by tense relations with European rulers, to whom he tried to impose political leadership. This is about a process that will soon introduce into a powerful and effective momentum – counteracting actions in the political, and triumph of Baroque in the cultural sphere.
The Italian form of his surname (Italian Pero – pear), believe the advocates of the theory of his Montenegrin roots, covers the allusion to the origin and Boka’s village of Kruševice.
However, according to the story of the Montenegrin-Croatian director Krsto Papic (“Foxes”, “Redeemer”), this family from Banjane in the familial tradition explains their surname – in connection with Pope Sixtus V.”

ANDRIJA ZMAJEVIC  (1628-1694) ABOUT SIXTUS V

“According to previous investigations of Popovic, Butorac and Serovic it can be reliably stated that Zmajevic’s allegations are correct. The son of poor settler’s immigrant from Krusevice climbs to the papal throne and achieves in a short time a remarkable success as a “Pope of Renaissance” (1858-1590). Zmajevic was the first to record the folk tradition that house of the Pope’s tribe is called Papici. P. Butorac presented the entire literature. In particular, the significant coincidence of the tradition in Krusevice and Montalto, where Sixtus’s father immigrated and where his son Feliche (Felix) was born, later Pope.. Zmajevic with great sympathy speaks about Sixtus’s extraordinary activity, feeling, and certainly even personal affinity for this type of strong and entrepreneurial people. In addition, Zmajevic is proud to point out that the pope remained faithful to his “Slavic people” by restoring the ‘Illyrian church’ of St. Jerome. And at the end of the description, stating that Pope Sixtus V was buried near the tomb of St. Jerome, the emotion of their closeness to origin is felt. ”

POPE SIXTUS V AND HIS ORIGINS FROM MONTENEGRO

Sixtus V, Pope 220, year 1585.
In Montalto, the town of Marca Iachina, was born from pious parents, from Dalmatian father from Krusevice, a village in Boka from Kotor, not far from Perast, of our place, where today’s Papic’s house is called and where are seen in it people that go along with it and from Italian mother. Being at first the monk of St. Francis, for the sake of wisdom and goodness, he has the command of every area. The Cardinal of the Holy Church on 24th April set on the throne of St. Peter. He built again the church of St. Jerome in Rome and dedicated it to his Slavic people. He made great gifts to the messenger from Japan, the kingdom of eastern India that came to bow to Gregory XIII. He exterminated thieves who were stealing travelers along with other criminals. He made so many great things in a short time, exceeding as well as the old gentleman in Roman Empire. He transferred the pillar of Caesar in front of the church of St. Peter along with other three noble ones, one in front of St. John Lateran, the other in front of the church of the Holy Virgin, the third in front of the Roman Holly door. Prohibit the wedding with the “haduma”, or with castrates, as a thing according to the law of nature. He collected five million or thousands of thousands of gold saying that with that wealth it could be done a lot.

Due to the disease, that made him voiceless, he died on 27th August, at the age of 70, after his ruling of five years and 4 months and 3 days. He was buried in the church of St. Peter, and then transferred to the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord, where he rests near the tomb of Saint Jerome.

Lazar Seferović – Herceg među gradovima, OD SVECA I PAPE DO POP I ROK ZVIJEZDA – Znameniti Novljani u svijetu

LAZAR SEFEROVIC – HERCEG BETWEEN CITIES, FROM THE SAINT TO THE POPE TO POP AND ROCK STARS – EMINENT CITIZENS OF HERCEG NOVI IN THE WORLD

A number of authors wrote about the Boka’s origin of Sixtust V in the mid-17th century. The first one among us wrote the Archbishop of Bar and the primacy of the Serbs Andrija Zmajevic, followed by Andrija Kacic-Miosic, priest Savo Nakicenović, Petar Serovic, Tomo K. Popovic, Pavle Butorac, and the contemporary Radosav Ratkovic, Balsa Brkovic and many Italian authors. There is no doubt; Sixtus’s father was born in Bijelske Krusevice above Bijela, from the family Svilanovic, at the end of the 15th century, in Boka Kotorska, where his descendants live nowadays.

Only 70 years after the death of Sixtus V, Andrija Zmajevic found himself attending school in Rome where he had the opportunity to get acquainted with the life and work of Pope Sixtus V. He saw the Pope’s portrait for the first time, writing about it a comprehensive study in two versions: Cyrillic and Latin “The state of the world, famous and lively, chronicle of the church”. At that time, he discovered the Pope’s protective coat of arms with three inserted pears in the claws of the lion, which confirmed the fact that “the pope is actually from our sides”, as archbishop Zmajevic wrote. The legend says that during his funeral, three pears shined on his sarcophagus.

The most complete story about the origin of the pope was given by the Archbishop from Kotor, i.e. Dubrovnik, Pavao Butorac, published in 1928/29  in the professional journal of archeology and history, the Dalmatian “Vjesnik”, the Archeological Museum in Split.

Here’s a short summary:
“About the Slavic origins of Sixtus V (1520-1590), one of the most genial popes, with us was very little written.  And it is not known either about his life or activity, even though he is the branch from our tree. The famous Pope from the Renaissance and Catholic renewal, Ljudevit Pastor, dedicated to him the Tenth Volume of his great Pope’s history.

  • The village of Krusevice, an old parish, and known for its priest of Dukla (XII), stretches out on a fertile hill from the north village of Bijela, an hour away from the sea. It belongs to the municipality of Herceg Novi. There is still a living tradition in this village that ancestors of Pope Sixtus originate from there . After that tradition, his father served as a child in the friars (Franciscans) in Kotor. He was taken to Italy by a monk named Marchiani, who preached the ecclesiastic learning in the t church of St. Tripun. As he grew old, he set up in a single village of Marche Iachine, and got married.  The tradition shows that the missionaries took Sixtus’s father from the spring named Karasvoda, in  Krusevice section of Kalimoz, first to Kotor, then to Italy.
  • Some people from Krusevice claim that Sixtus’s family belonged to the indigenous tribe of Svilanovic. Others say that he was from the tribe of Sisic, extinct already in the first half of the last century
  • The saga of the Pope is so common in Krusevice, that even this is said, as the Pope was financially assisted by Orthodox Churches in Krusevice and Bijela. However, it is evident that under the Venetian rule the papal inheritors were looked for. Certainly, in the statements or lists of soul masters for the partition of salt about the half of the 18th century, some Peretic is mentioned in Krusevice. Sixtus’s surname Peretti meets in Perast in 1655, according to issue 98 of the archive of the District Court in Kotor (f.142), and even in the second half of the 18th
  • Andrija Zmajević, from Perast, first abbot of St. Juraj in Perast, and the Archbishop of Bar and Prime of Serbia writes in his church chronicle that Sixtus V was born in Montalto of poor Slavic parents, and his father was from Krusevice, a village of herceg Novi state, not far from Perast “our place”, and even today, when Zmajevic wrote, is called his house from Papic tribe, and in it people looks like him, pretty in appearance and in stature – It is said  that the name Papici, a nickname that people from  Krusevice,  after the Pope named, later attached to that branch of the tribe of Svilanovic or Sisic, from which Sixtus originated.
  • Interesting is the fact that it is deducted by Tomo K. Popovic: “According to this, Zmajevici, being in Rome where he learned, often stopped before the image of Sixtus V to watch it closely. When he returned to his homeland, the case takes him to some man from Krusevice. He noticed him with exclaiming with joy to his escort that this man was in all things and in all respects true image of  Sixtus’s  painting that he had recently seen in Rome, just like cutting the apple in half. This was heard by Archbishop Djurmut and Archpriest Fruska, so this story ran from mouth to mouth.
  • The testimony of Andrija Kacic-Miosic (1696-1766) is also important. He mentions in his “Pleasant Conversation of Slavic People”, among Popes of Slavic origin, Sixtus. He says of him: “Pope Sixtus V, from Boka Kotorska from Krusevice, a Dalmatian, as evidenced by his letters, which are found in Vatican in Rome, who does not believe, better to remain silent.”
